These skills will be acquired by creating presentations and taking part in discussions relating to current topics in the press and online.

Year 10

In September of year 10 the students will start their coursework. This will be the first component that the students will be studying. The topic area is related to Human Life span development, this is all about how we develop and grow throughout our life stages. They then move onto understanding factors which have an impact on growth and development in each of the life stages. We grow and develop in four key areas; physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. These will be looked at in detail throughout the whole of the first component of study.

In the second part of the school year the students will study the Health and Social Care Values, this is the second component. Learners will explore the health and social care services that are available and why individuals may need to use them. Following this, learners will explore barriers that can make it difficult to use these services and how these barriers can be overcome.

In the second assignment for component 2, learners will explore and practise applying the different care values that are key to the delivery of effective health and social care services. Furthermore, learners will reflect on their own application of care values, including using teacher or service-user feedback.

Both components are coursework based and will be marked internally.

The learners will explore how factors can affect an individual’s health and wellbeing positively or negatively. This links to, and extends, knowledge and understanding of life events covered in Component 1, but here the focus is on health and wellbeing.

Learners will then study how to interpret indicators that can be used to measure physiological health, such as; pulse (resting and recovery rate after exercise), blood pressure, peak flow and body mass index (BMI). interpreting data using published guidance. Learners will interpret lifestyle data in relation to risks posed to physical health. For example: smoking, alcohol consumption and inactive lifestyles.

Accumulating to the learners exploring the obstacles that individuals can face when implementing these plans and how they may be mitigated.
