Appeals for Places in Years 7, 8, 9, 10, or 11
Should we be unable to offer you a place, you have the right to appeal. The appeal panel operates independently of both the school and the council, and their decision is legally binding. Before initiating your appeal, please consider the following:
- Accept any place offered to you in case your appeal is unsuccessful.
- Reflect on the reasons for your appeal and evaluate its likelihood of success.
- Review the advice available for appealing.
- Check the school places information on GOV.UK.
- Seek independent advice regarding the appeals process from a charity.
Leeds City Council manages our appeals, and you can find the appeal form at School Appeals (leeds.gov.uk).
If you are appealing for a Year 7 place for September 2027, please submit your appeal form by 31 March 2027 to ensure it is heard before the summer holidays.
For current Years 7, 8, 9, 10, or 11, your hearing will be scheduled as soon as possible, and no later than 30 school days after your appeal submission date.
You may appeal if you wish for your child to attend a specific school. Appeals are more likely to succeed if the panel agrees that your reasons outweigh the school’s decision to limit admissions.
Simply wanting your child to attend what you believe is the best school in the area may not convince the panel to grant admission.
After submitting your appeal, Leeds City Council Admissions will invite you to a hearing. You will be notified at least 10 school days prior to the hearing, including the date and time.
Hearings may occur anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Before the appeal, you will receive the appeal papers, which include all documents you submitted and the school’s statement of case explaining their refusal. It is essential that you read these materials prior to the hearing.
Following the appeal hearing, a decision letter will be dispatched within 5 school days. The panel’s decision is final.
Please note that school days refer only to term time and do not include holidays. If an appeal is submitted during the holidays, the school days timeline will commence at the beginning of the next term. For example, an appeal received in July after the school year has concluded will not be addressed until the new academic term, with “school days” starting from the beginning of September.
